Brunswick, Ohio — The Brunswick High School Men’s Soccer Team defeated the Cardinals of Mentor by the score of 3-0 on Tuesday night. Brunswick improved to 5-0-1 on the season and 2-0-0 in the GCC. Mentor drops to 4-2-0 overall and 0-2-0 in the GCC.

Brunswick now leads the historical series between the conference rivals by the margin of 7-3-0.

In the first half, the match was tightly contested throughout with neither team finding an advantage. However, just before the break, freshman midfielder Evan Horner played a penetrating pass behind the Mentor defense to Jordan Piskach. The senior striker rounded the goalkeeper near the end line was and was able to squeeze a shot in off the post with just 1:35 remaining in the half.

Brunswick was able to hold that lead until halftime.

Coach Dotson was pleased at the break. “We played a bit nervy, we had some players in new positions, but we played it pretty conservatively and Jordan and Evan found a goal out of nothing. We really encouraged the boys at halftime to really play aggressive and confident in the second half”

Brunswick came out on fire in the second and the spark came from Logan Scherer. The senior midfielder and captain had been deputizing at center back all game long, but was moved to midfield for a short span, and instantly lifted the offense. In 59th minute, Scherer was able to steal a pass around midfield, sprayed a ball wide to junior midfielder Derek Lung. Lung played a one-time pass into Piskach who played a first-time flick into the path of Scherer. Scherer then one-timed it the path of an on-running Josh Lord who buried the finish for the 2-0 lead.

The goal broke Mentor’s spirit and Brunswick dominated the rest of the way. That domination paid off with 6:08 remaining when Brunswick was awarded a foul. Senior midfielder and captain Cole Parete hit a 24 yard bender in the top corner to finish the game off.

Dotson was even more pleased in the second half, especially with Scherer, who he named Man of Match. “We were obviously short personnel tonight, and Logan volunteered to play center back. We pulled him out briefly, and he turned the game on its head. He was fantastic tonight.”

Senior captain and goalkeeper Gavyn Ernst picked up the win with a clean sheet and eight saves. His season record now stands at 5-0-1. Connor Larick took the loss for Mentor, making 11 saves.

Brunswick next plays when they play host to the Middies of Midview on Saturday. Kick-off is scheduled for 7:00 pm. Brunswick will honor its 12 seniors before kick-off for senior night.
