Multiple Teams · Blue Devils Avenge Last Year’s Playoff Defeat, Knock Off Hoban 3-0

(Box Score versus Archbishop Hoban) (Season Stats 2016)

Brunswick, Ohio – The Brunswick High School Men’s Soccer Team won their final match of the 2016 Regular Season with a 3-0 win over Akron Archbishop Hoban.  Brunswick finished the season at 12-0-4.  With the win, Brunswick clinched its first undefeated regular season in school history.  Brunswick also now leads the historical series between the teams with two wins to one loss.  The teams have tied twice.

Hoban ends the regular season with only their second loss out of the season with a 9-2-4 record.  The reigning North Coast League Champions were a difficult opponent that made life difficult on the Blue Devils all night.

The first half featured choppy play riddled with fouls that left both teams frustrating entering halftime with the score deadlocked at zeroes.

In the second half, however, Brunswick showed their quality over the Knights and took revenge for last year’s Sectional Championship loss.

At the 56:31 mark off the match, junior midfielder Nick Demonte would finally get the Blue Devils on the board.  Senior forward and captain Ryan Scott would get free on the left flank and serve a ball into the box to Demonte who scored from close range.  The goal was Demonte’s fifth of the season.

Demonte had come down with a painful injury in the first half but worked out the issue to score what would end up being the game winner.

Demonte’s goal sparked the Blue Devil offense into an multi-goal onslaught.

Just over four minutes later, a creative set piece from All-GCC midfielder Nick Felician found Ben Clouse free inside the six-yard area to double the advantage.  Felician played a low pass around the wall to the senior captain and defender who slotted the ball past goalkeeper Graham Mellon for the two-goal advantage.

With just under 12 minutes remaining, Scott again would find space on the left flank near the Knight penalty area and would play a backwards pass to on on-rushing Collin Parete.  The sophomore forward would bury Scott’s pass in the roof of the net make the score 3-0.  The goal was the first of Parete’s young career.

Coach Dotson was pleased with the result.  “Hoban is a difficult opponent.  They close down well and pack-defend as well as anyone we have seen.  They are going to prove a tough out in the tournament.”

Demonte earned Man of the Match Honors for his game-winning goal.

Coach Dotson thought Demonte sparked the team at a crucial time.  “Nick provided us an emotional lift late in the game.  He came off injured early but fought through it because the team needed him.  We got a bit frustrated at times with our lack of success in the final third but he answered the call at the right moment.  Proud of that kid, tonight!”

Senior goalkeeper and captain Gavin Leindecker was kept out of the match for pre-cautionary reasons. Senior forward Cory Gilbert filled in and won his fifth game of the season on two saves.  In five games in relief, Gilbert did not allow a goal.  He pushed his season record to 5-0-0.  Mellon took the loss for Hoban making just one save.

Brunswick next plays when they host the winner of Akron Garfield and Wooster next Thursday for the Sectional Final of the OHSAA State Tournament.  Kick-off is set for 4:45 pm at Brunswick Auto Mart Stadium.  The girls team will host Wooster immediately after for a playoff double header.
