MEDINA — Brunswick freshman Hannah Burk is only two weeks into her high school gymnastics career. Fortunately, she has two accomplished teammates to help her with the transition. Returning district qualifiers Alexx Sikora and Camryn Scott joined Burk in finishing in the top seven in the all-around Thursday at the inaugural Greater Cleveland Conference Meet.
“I’ve honestly asked them about everything because this is all so new to me,” Burk said, smiling. “They’ve taught me a lot already, and I’m going to keep asking them questions the rest of the season. “We all have the same goal. No one at our school knows much about our gymnastics team, but we want to change that as quickly as possible.” The Blue Devils (134.025) finished third in the team standings behind state power Mentor (141.25) and Solon (134.85) at the six-school event. Medina (133.3) was fourth and Strongsville (128.075) placed fifth — and likely will meet again in three weeks at the West Geauga District. Brunswick was the lone squad to place a trio in the top seven of the all-around.
Burk finished fourth (34.325), Sikora was fifth (34.25), and Scott wound up seventh (34.00). “I’m really excited about what could happen at sectionals and districts with this team,” said Sikora, an All-Gazette selection. “Camryn and I have been there before, but we have so many other girls who can do well. “Hannah, especially, has a great opportunity to come up big. I’m glad she asks a lot of questions because she is awesome.” Burk and senior Sikora each earned All-GCC honors with runner-up finishes in their specialties. The former scored an 8.9 on the vault, while the latter earned a 9.0 on the floor exercise. Mentor’s Caitlin Coode won both events.
Sikora added a fourth-place finish on the balance beam (9.2), while Burk was third on the uneven parallel bars (8.875). Sophomore Paige Scharschmidt and senior Nicole Pryatel also counted two scores apiece for the Blue Devils, who competed without injured junior Jessica Froncek. “We did not start the day well with falls on the beam, but we finished so strong,” Brunswick coach Jamie Woelfl said. “The main thing with a young team is being able to bounce back emotionally, and our girls showed a lot of mental toughness.”
