Brunswick Itching To Have Big Season

obtained from Medina Gazette

By: Brad Bournival

The Brunswick softball team knows just how close it was a year ago, even though its record was just 11-12. The Blue Devils played 13 one-run games and lost 10 of them, so the difference between 11-12 and 21-2 really wasn ’t that much. Erin Calhoun remembers it. So do Paige Salisbury, Courtney Saville, Sydney Sherry, Molly Grzybowski, Megan Mulhan and Maria Payne. The one-run games were killers, especially a 1-0 loss to Barberton in the Barberton Division I District semifinals .

Those seven players are looking at 2015 as a means to erase the heartbreak of 2014 and end things with a Northeast Ohio Conference Valley Division title . “That is definitely in the back of their minds,” Blue Devils coach Julie Salzman said. “The kids that are coming back knew we had the talent. How many games did we lose by one run? It makes these kids that much hungrier . “We could have accomplished so much more. For these four seniors (Calhoun, Salisbury, Saville and Sherry), they’re looking at it as, ‘This is our year. This is what we’ve worked so hard for. Let’s get it done.’”

While they have a ton of hitting back and an ace pitcher in Saville with a viable backup in Sherry, the Blue Devils aren ’t taking anything for granted. “In the years I’ve been at Brunswick, this is probably the best preseason I’ve had as far as the girls dedicating themselves, the time and the effort, ” Salzman said. “These kids are lifting every Tuesday and Thursday at 6 a.m. These kids have bought into our system and are hungry. ” Here’s a look at Brunswick:
