GARFIELD HTS. — The Brunswick wrestling team went into the Northeast Ohio Conference Tournament on Friday with hopes of becoming the only school to three-peat in the eight-year history of the event.
It’s going to take a mountain of an effort — and a little luck — for the Blue Devils to overtake Elyria, which has a 40ﾽ -point lead.
It was not what Brunswick didn’t do as much as what the Pioneers did.
The Blue Devils will send Matt Fields (106 pounds), Josh Heil (132), Nicky Kiussis (145), Christian Camacho (152), Frank Tusick (160), Branden Bryant (170), Aaron Naples (195) and Colin Sustersic (220) into today’s semifinals.
The problem is, Elyria rolled off 25 wins before it lost, registered pins in 10 of its first 11 matches and put 12 into today’s 12:30 p.m. semifinals.
“We knew they were a very good team, but to do what they did is amazing,” Brunswick coach Mike Koshar said. “That’s pretty special to go 25-0 before losing a match. We had a few matches slip away from us tonight to have a competitive chance. We’re not mathematically eliminated, but it’s more possible than probable.”
What makes it even tougher for the Blue Devils to come back is there won’t be many head-to-head battles with the Pioneers in the semifinals, where the majority of team points are scored.
Of the 12 semifinals the Pioneers will participate in, only Josh Breeding and Fields will meet at 106 and Brendan Price and Kiussis will match up at 145.
“I know they’re a good team and they’d be tough to beat,” Kiussis said. “We’re just trying to hang in there and get points near the end of the tournament. It’ll be tough to come back. We have to come out strong.
“I’ll have an Elyria wrestler. We’ll have to win those big matches and see how it plays out. We’re not out yet. We have to improve as a team. This has brought us closer together.”
That feeling spread throughout as Brunswick rolled off win after win in the quarterfinals with its impressive octet of semifinalists.
“There’s a lot more days left to go in the room and get prepared (before state),” Naples said. “We knew they were a good team and knew they’d be a team to contest. We need to win and take away those points. At the same time, we have to keep our tempo up.”
Medina will send three into the semifinals, as Brady Chrisman (132) reached in his first NOCT. He’ll be joined by Zach DeFraine at 152 and Alex Sadowsky at 170.
For Chrisman, who will have Heil in the semis, it wasn’t a surprise. The same can be said for DeFraine at 152. Sadowsky didn’t come out of nowhere, either, but his quarterfinal win was a bit of revenge against Solon’s Rodney Stewart, who beat him earlier in the year.
“Having three is great,” Bees coach Chad Gilmore said. “Brady wrestled well. Zach had a tough match, but wrestled through. I’m happiest about Alex Sadowsky. He got beat 9-4 at the Maumee Bay Classic by that Solon kid and got taken down several times. We changed some things and dominated the match. To be in the semis is awesome.”
