(Box Score versus Wooster) (Season Stats 2016)

Brunswick, Ohio – The Brunswick High School Men’s Soccer Team won their opening match of the 2016 OHSAA Tournament with a 3-1 win over Wooster.  Brunswick improves to 13-0-4 and advances to the district semifinal round of the tournament to face the winner of third seeded Copley and seventh seeded Highland.  That match will be played Saturday evening at 7:00 pm.

Wooster bows out of the tournament with a 10-3-4 record.  The reigning Ohio Cardinal Conference Championship gave the Blue Devils fits all night but eventually subsided to the pressure of the Blue Devils.

Brunswick started the game on fire as junior All-GCC midfielder Nick Felician drew a penalty kick just 1:42 into the match after dribbling by four General players.  Felician took and converted the penalty for the early 1-0 lead.  The goal was Felician’s team leading 11th of the season.

Brunswick would continue to dominate proceedings taking five shots and earning four corners but could not find the back of the net and went into halftime with the narrow margin.

Midway through the second half, Brunswick would double their advantage on a Felician corner kick.  Senior defender and captain Ben Clouse flicked the corner on to Nick Demonte at the corner of the penalty area.  The junior midfielder would rifle a left footed blast into the roof of the net for the 2-0 advantage.

Late in the half, Brunswick would score again with Felician pulling the strings.  Latching onto a ball in the center of the field, Felician took several dribbles and then played a ball in behind the General defense to senior forward Cory Gilbert.  Gilbert slotted the ball past Wooster goalkeeper Julien Lubell for the 3-0 advantage.

The Generals would earn a late penalty on a handball.  Joe Stoll’s initial penalty was saved by senior captain and goalkeeper Gavin Leindecker but Tyler Foster’s rebound effort found the back of the net to make the score 3-1.

Coach Dotson was pleased with the result.  “We did not play our best soccer tonight but it was a good opening round match for us.  Wooster came in on a mission and proved a difficult opponent  Unfortunately for them, they could not match our quality and that won out in the end.”

Felician earned Man of the Match Honors for a goal and an assist.

Coach Dotson thought Felician played very well.  “Nickie showed how classy of a player he was tonight.  Wooster played him very physical but he kept his composure and made things happen tonight for us.”

Leindecker earned the win on three saves. Lubell took the loss despite making six saves.

The district semifinal will be played next Wednesday evening at 7:00 pm at Brunswick Auto Mart Stadium.
