Brunswick, Ohio – The Brunswick High School Men’s Soccer Team won over conference-rival Elyria Tuesday evening, a solid 2-0 victory. With the win, Brunswick improves to 9-0-2 overall and 5-0-0 in the GCC. Mentor drops to 1-7-2 overall and 1-4-0 n the GCC. Brunswick is now tied in the historical series between the sides with three wins a piece.
In the first half, Brunswick would come out and pressure the Cardinals in their own in an attempt to snag an early goal. The plan worked to perfection in the 6th minute. After a turnover, junior All-GCC midfielder Nick Felician played a ball in behind the Mentor defense to junior midfielder Nick Demonte. Demonte took a touch before lashing a low shot past Mentor goalkeeper Nathan Volker. The goal was the fourth of the season by Demonte.
Just before halftime, the Blue Devils would double their advantage. After a pass from senior captain and midfielder Ryan Scott, Nate Bohrer would send a ball into the box that ended up in the back of the net. The goal was the sophomore defender’s first of his young career.
Brunswick would head into halftime with that advantage.
In the second half, Brunswick would continue to dominate the Cardinals, outshooting them them 9-3 as well as winning the corner kick battle 5-0. Despite the better of play, Brunswick could not add to their advantage and the game ended with the 2-0 score line.
Mentor did have once chance in the second half that was headed into the goal but senior captain and defender saved the ball off the line.
Senior midfielder Cory Gilbert, starting in place of injured starter Gavin Leindecker, earned the win and the clean sheet for the third consecutive match. Gilbert made three saves. For Mentor, Volker made 13 saves in the loss.
Clouse and sophomore midfielder Ryan Utrup were named Co-Men of the Match.
Coach Dotson was very happy with both players performance tonight. “Clouse continued to dominate defensively and made a big save off the line. He continues to have an outstanding season. Utrup was fantastic off the bench tonight and really helped us in possession. Excellent effort from him tonight. ”
The Blue Devils have a quick turnaround before their next match. They next play next Thursday in non-conference action against Akron Firestone. The match is set for 7:00 pm at Brunswick Auto Mart Stadium.
