GCC CHAMPIONS

(Box Score versus Medina) (Season Stats 2016)

Brunswick, Ohio – The Brunswick High School Men’s Soccer Team clinched the Greater Cleveland Conference Championship with a 0-0 draw at Memorial Stadium in Medina last night.  Brunswick finishes the conference slate with a undefeated 6-0-1 record.

Medina, who with a win could have shared the crown with Brunswick and Shaker Heights, fell back to third place at 5-1-1.  Shaker did win their match over Elyria to finish in second place by the score of 7-2 to finish at 6-1-0.

Brunswick’s overall record now stands at 11-0-4 and Medina sits at 13-1-2.  This game was very promising before it started as Brunswick cracked the top 10 in the OSSCA Coaches Poll debuting at #4 and Medina, who had been in the top 10 all season, was #6.

In the first half, the teams traded offensive shots with both teams having great chances.  15 minutes into the game, Medina County leading scorer Justin Libertowski chipped senior goalkeeper and captain Gavin Leindecker and the ball was headed in.  Fortunately for Brunswick, senior defender and captain Ben Clouse leaped and headed away the effort from the Medina striker and kept the score deadlocked.

A few moments later, junior All-GCC midfielder Nick Felician flicked a long pass from Clouse into the penalty area.  Allen Gronert one-timed the pass into the net.  Unfortunately, the senior forward’s goal was ruled off-sides.

The half would end with the score 0-0.

In the second half, the Blue Devils struggled in the offensive end and could not get going.  However, the defense led by Clouse and fellow senior captain Luke Steinkamp was up to the task of keeping one of the top offenses in the state in check.

In the 65th minute however, the Brunswick defense nearly cracked.  Bees forward Andy Prostor got in behind the Blue Devil defense and headed straight to goal.  The Medina speedster attempted to play the ball past Leindecker, but the three-year All-Conference produced a stellar save to keep the Bees at bay.

As the time on the match slowly ticked away, the team settled in and denied everything Medina threw at them and preserved the 0-0 draw to win the GCC Title outright.

Coach Dotson was overwhelmed at the championship.  “Words escape you in a moment like this.  We are just so proud of our kids.  No one thought we would contend for the title this year.  In 34 years of the program (One being a club sport), we have one two league titles before tonight.  They are special kids who believed they could do this and they went out and did it.  Everyone said Medina, Shaker, Strongsville…but tonight, we are the last one standing and it is a great feeling to be their coach.”

Leindecker earned Man of the Match Honors for several stellar saves (3) and keeping the clean sheet.

Coach Dotson was very proud of his goalkeeper.  “Gavin is a special young man and have given everything to this program.  Tonight, he made some unbelievable saves to keep us in the game and on track for the title.  I would like to say I am surprised, but I am not.  You run out of compliments for this kid who continues to amaze us.”

For Medina, Tyler Glasenapp made four saves and kept a clean sheet as well.

The Blue Devils next play when they welcome Archbishop Akron Hoban to the Auto Mart on Saturday, October 15th.  Kick-off is scheduled for 7:00 pm.
