(Box Score versus Akron Firestone) (Season Stats 2016)

Brunswick, Ohio – The Brunswick High School Men’s Soccer Team won over traditional-rival Akron Firestone Thursday evening with a 2-0 scoreline. With the win, Brunswick improves to 10-0-2 overall.  Akron Firestone drops to 5-4-1 overall.    Brunswick now leads in the historical series between the sides with 7-2-1 record.

The game only lasted 40 minutes as severe weather moved into the area just after halftime.

Fortunately for the Blue Devils, senior captain and forward Ryan Scott was dangerous on the flanks from the opening whistle.  Scott cut through the Falcon defense on numerous occasions to create multiple opportunities in the final third.

That pressure finally paid off at the 16:26 mark of the first half when Scott knifed again through the Firestone defense and played a perfect back pass to senior forward Allen Gronert.  Gronert slid the ball under goalkeeper Hank Curlee for the 1-0 lead.

With less than seven minutes remaining in the match, junior All-GCC midfielder Nick Felician played a through ball to sophomore midfielder Garrett Shay on a break away.  Shay approached the 18 and looped a chip over Curlee into the top corner for the 2-0 lead.

Brunswick would take that lead into the half time break, which in turn would end the game as lightning would be spotted in the area ending the match.

Senior midfielder Cory Gilbert, starting in place of injured starter Gavin Leindecker, earned the win and the clean sheet for the fourth consecutive match.  Gilbert made three saves.  For Firestone, Curlee made two saves in the loss.

Scott was named Man of the Match for his brilliant wide play on he evening.

Coach Dotson was quick to pour praise on Scott.  “Ryan is such a dangerous player from wide positions.  When he is in the mood, he is one of the most dangerous players in the area.  Tonight, he was tremendous in taking players on in and around the box and really made a difference tonight. ”

The Blue Devils have the weekend off for homecoming before coming back to GCC action next week.  Brunswick plays Shaker Heights next Wednesday, October 5th at at Brunswick Auto Mart Stadium.
